Chapter 14

London helped Daphne into her house with the luggage. “Sorry about the evening.”

“It’s no problem, London. I understand.” She lowered her voice. “You’re lucky my parents aren’t here. I think my dad wants a word with you.”

London lowered the largest bag on the oval rug at the entrance. “Why?”

She sighed. “It’s a man-to-man thing, I guess.”

The patter of a child’s feet directed London’s attention toward the hallway. A little girl who was obviously a close relative of Daphne’s waltzed directly toward him.

Daphne picked up the little girl and kissed her cheek. “Ava. This is my friend, London. And this is my niece, Ava.”

London could have sworn this little girl was mean-mugging him. “Hello, Ava.”

“Hi.” Her eyes surveyed him.

Daphne asked, “Where’s your mom?”

“She’s taking a shower. I’m watching my movie.”

“I see,” Daphne laughed.

“Is this the boy you kissed?” the girl asked, pointing a finger at him.

Daphne jerked her head back. “Ava, no!”

London blinked a few times.

“Did you kiss her?” Ava demanded an answer from him.

He replied, “No. I am definitely not the one she kissed. She kissed a really ugly guy. And he is mean, too.”

“Grrrr!” Ava growled. “I don’t like that boy!”

“Me, either!” London egged her on.

“I like you,” Ava tapped his chest.

“Me, too!” London seconded.

“Ah!” Daphne set Ava on the floor. “Go finish the movie, Bumble bee.”

The little girl obeyed immediately, leaving London in a state of confusion. Who was Daphne kissing? Had she been talking to her family about some other man?

“You are so wrong.”

London put a hand on his chest. “Hey, I’m just sayin’. Whoever you’re kissing, Ava obviously doesn’t like him.”

Daphne squinted. “What if I like him?”

London masked his second round of envy for the night. “That’s cool, you know. Whatever works for you.”

Daphne’s stern expression broke. “For the record, it’s not true, okay? Ava overheard my sister suggesting I kissed somebody—”

“How did your sister get that idea?” London blurted out before he’d had a chance to censor his thoughts.

Daphne crossed her arms.

“I’m sorry.” He bowed his head. “What you do is your business.”

“London, I am not kissing or seeing or dating anyone, okay?”

He hid the smile welling inside. “That’s good to know.”

Daphne’s eyes dropped to the floor. She wasn’t doing as good a job of hiding her smile. “Thanks for inviting me to the game.”

“You’re welcome. Maybe next time, we can actually enjoy it.”

“No rush,” she said.

London pulled her into a hug. He pecked her on the forehead. “Now you can tell Ava that I kissed you so she can stop worrying about old boy.”

“Oh, I’m sure she’ll ask me,” Daphne said. “Night.”

“See you later.”
